Dealing with bailiffs

If you receive a notice advising that a bailiff will be coming to your house, you would obviously wish to be prepared. Firstly, it should be noted that you do not have to let a bailiff in the house. However, a bailiff may gain legal entry to the house through any open door or window. If you have refused entry to bailiffs, do not be too hopeful as they will return. You should seek assistance in this regard as soon as possible.

Bailiffs are sometimes used to threaten to take away possessions which then may be sold as a means of raising money to repay a part of your debt. There are some goods that bailiffs should not be able to take from your home. These include clothing, furniture and other personal and domestic items considered necessary basics. For a more detailed list or additional information, do contact a financial advisor or a representative of the citizen's advice bureau. It should also be noted that once bailiffs have gained entry to a property, they can use force to open other internal doors.

If you receive a bailiff notice or have good reason to believe that you might receive a bailiff visit, it is advisable to check out your rights in this regard. Do ask for assistance from a debt or financial advisor. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that bailiffs are not allowed to enter a home without your permission. However, it should be noted that if bailiffs have entered once with permission, they may enter an additional time without permission.

So be advised and good luck!
